Reflections: Leopard is a Classic

I am sure everyone has seen leopard out on the streets this spring and summer and in all the retailers. As almost all trends tend to go, things are cyclical and leopard-printed anything is certainly not new! It has been done every decade in some form for us regular folks since Dior first showed it on the catwalk in 1947. It has always vacillated between powerful/sexy/cool to trashy and low class. Leopard-print is currently enjoying a revival in the most utilitarian of silhouettes like jeans, wide leg pants and accessories. I always invested in this “neutral” by way of belts and footwear and generally lusted after the beautiful leopard coats every season at Ralph Lauren when I worked there. Here is a shot of me wearing it recently and a few snaps I grabbed on the streets in Paris lately.

The cool, slinky wide leg leopard pant I “spotted” is a modern way to wear this re-emergence while the leopard belt this lady wore on the right is paired with a gingham skirt and black ballet flats.

I love wearing leopard accessories and this is a great way to invest in this print if you feel pants or a top is too much. I have heels, pointed toe flats and these loafers all in leopard and have had them for 10-plus years. So when you see cute leopard pieces in your favorite stores, think about what the print means to you and how you would style it. Do not impulse buy just because everyone seems to be wearing at the moment. Leopard IS a classic and can be worn for years to come, just always think about the piece you choose and if you see yourself wearing it even a year down the road? Tell me, how would you wear leopard?
